When was Stewards of Metro Parks created? The initial conversations began in early 2008 and they resulted in our incorporation as a volunteer based not-for-profit organization in April 2008. We seated our present board of directors in May 2008. Our application for an IRS 501(c)(3) status is pending. We commenced our program activities in January 2009 with the announcement of our project to reintroduce bison to one or two Metro Parks in the Darby Plains area.
Why was Stewards of Metro Parks created? We were created to respond to the public's interest for a membership organization that would serve to support the array of programs and facilities of the Columbus & Franklin County Metropolitan Parks District (Metro Parks). Our goal is to complement the programs of the Metro Parks by providing supportive projects and unique interactive activities - and to provide the public with an avenue thru which to contribute volunteer hours and financial gifts.
How can I join Stewards of Metro Parks? Join us in our active support of Metro Parks by becoming a Steward. Membership information is accessible via our Membership page.
What will the activities of Stewards of Metro Parks be? As we begin to implement our planned projects, look for announcements of supportive events. As we develop our membership base, we will schedule unique "off-trail" experiences for our members that will compliment the traditional "on-trail" programs of Metro Parks. We will welcome suggestions for activities from our membership.
How long have the Metro Parks been around? Created in 1945, Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Parks (Metro Parks) is a separate political subdivision of the State of Ohio, operating under the Ohio Revised Code. Today, their park lands encompass more than 23,500 acres, primarily in Franklin County and with acreage in Delaware, Union, Madison, Pickaway, Fairfield, and Hocking counties. Their mission is "to conserve open spaces, while providing places and opportunities for people to discover and experience nature. A major source of their funding is a Franklin County voter approved ten-year property tax levy. Visit their website (www.metroparks.net) for comprehensive information about Metro Parks.
